Backstory

The Sporelings are the oldest non-Celestrian intelligence in the galaxy. They reproduce by infesting host bodies and slowly converting the host's nervous system to fungal substrate; the original host's memories remain accessible to the new Sporeling for decades. They are patient negotiators and have outlived three empires. Their warbands move in slow, coordinated waves.

Physiology

Fungal humanoid bodies grown from infested hosts. Memories of previous hosts persist as a kind of ancestral memory cloud.

Visual template

Humanoid bodies that were once OTHER species — a Sporeling card might be a Drifter-shaped or Voidkin-shaped or Veridian-shaped silhouette grown over by fungal substrate. Skin replaced by soft pale-grey fungal tissue with a network of darker mycelial veins. The original host's frame is still visible underneath but warped — slightly slumped, slightly elongated. Every Sporeling carries one prominent fruiting cap on the top of the head — color varies by host generation: pale lavender, rust-orange, mottled black, or bright spore-green. Eyes are clouded white or replaced entirely by glowing spore-orbs. From around the body a soft drift of bioluminescent spores moves slowly outward (the card's energy effect). They wear remnants of their host's clothing — fading, mold-stained, with new fungal growth pushing through. Weapons are whatever the host carried, often a slow heavy melee piece. Posture is patient and stooped, never hurried. They look like they have all the time in the world.
